About

I lead engineering teams, and I still write code.

Tony Burian, smiling, in a dark quarter-zip sweater

Most of my career has been spent running engineering, platform, infrastructure, and DevOps organizations. At TCGplayer I built several engineering disciplines from scratch. At CallRail and FloQast I grew SRE and cloud teams, and at Abridge I stood up platform engineering.

Before that I worked in digital media at Encompass Digital Media, Discovery Communications, and Crawford Communications. That’s where I learned software engineering, systems architecture, and platform design.

I also founded PackFresh, which makes software for trading card collectors, players, and shops. I build all of it myself, including OrganizedPlay, NetDeck, and Scout.

I live in Marietta, Georgia. I have an MBA in Operations Management from Mercer University and bachelor’s degrees in Computer Information Systems and Business Management from Emory & Henry College.

How I lead

  • The team comes first

Titles and org charts matter less to me than whether people have what they need. I set clear goals, clear the path, and then get out of the way.

  • Grow people

Some of the work I’m proudest of is helping engineers become managers and helping new managers find their own style. A one-on-one should be the place to bring a hard problem or a career question.

  • Stay technical

I still build software. That lets me work through a design or an incident with the people closest to it, and weigh cost against reliability with real context.

  • Just enough process

Good process is the least process that gets results. Clear ownership and honest incident reviews go a long way. I add structure where it’s missing and remove it where it gets in the way.

“Having a boss with whom you can talk through an architecture or implementation quandary, then pivot and discuss how to develop your skills and plan your next career goal is uncommon and so helpful.”
